The “Windsor” suspended bridge in Gibraltar has been inaugurated to the public by Chief Minister Fabian Picardo on June 21st. Its conception, manufacture and assembly were entrusted to iMuntanya. The difficult location of the bridge, overlooking the city and bay, did not allow access with machinery or helicopter, and was key to Gibraltar authorities’ decision to put the project in the hands of our technicians and specialized personnel.
The bridge was conceived as a part of the efforts to improve the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and is located on a 50-meters gorge. Boosting this area as an attraction for tourists, the construction of the footbridge has allowed to place value on the set of natural trails, which have been converted for a family use along with the placement of information panels. Thanks to the suspended bridge, areas of historical interest have been reopened to the public, which has encouraged tourism. In words of Tourism Minister Samantha Sacramento, “the bridge is an innovative attraction, as it is a magnificent product and a wonderful improvement for Gibraltar.” A must-do for bridge walkers!
Due to its importance for the promotion of tourism as well as hiking routes and outdoor leisure, the inauguration has had great impact on local and International media such as Lonely Planet and Gibraltar Chronicle.
